Great Lakes Freighter  (1/87 scale Resin Kit)
Actual Size: 36" X  6"
Kit Number: SGLF-1050
$299.00 plus S/H

Our Great Lakes Freighter is patterned after a St. Lawrence "canaller". While canallers have the look of a typical freighter, they were much shorter, as their size was restricted by the locks on the St. Lawrence River prior to the Seaway opening in 1959. This is an ideal prototype, as no selective compression is required to have a "layout" sized boat. It is also suitable for most modeling eras, as these boats sailed from the turn of the century, with some surviving up into the early 1980's. Common commodities for these boats would include coal, grain, cement, and iron ore.

Kit includes all parts, fittings, and accessories for a complete model, including etched brass stanchions, and a fully detailed wheelhouse interior. Main structural assembly is simplified by the use of one piece castings. Model measures 36" in length and 6" wide, representing a 258' long freighter. Additional mid-sections (described below) are available separately for those who require a longer boat.

Great Lakes Freighter -- Mid Section Only  (1/87 scale Resin Kit)
Actual Size: 10"
Kit Number: SFM-1050M
$59.00 plus S/H

After the St. Lawrence Seaway opened in 1959, many "canallers" were stretched to increase their length to add cargo capacity. Our mid-section adds 72 scale feet (10" in HO-Scale) to our 1050 kit. Mid section includes cargo hatches, etched brass stanchions, and line for railings. Two mid sections may be added to the basic kit, and still be prototypical to some stretched boats.

Please note, this kit contains only the parts for a mid section, and does not build into a complete boat on its own.

Kit Number: SRTB-1027

This kit is perfect for any harbour or river scene. With its high pilot house, this tug typifies a railroad tug boat used for moving railroad car flats and barges. The higher pilot house allows the captain to see over a railway car float loaded with box car. With the closing of most car float operations, many of these tugs may now be seen in regular tug boat service. Kit includes etched brass stanchions.

During the 1950's many of the Great Lakes Towing Company's steam tugs were converted to diesel. This resulted in modifications to the houses and stack. These changes are reflected in our modernized version of the L.C. Sabin. Many of the tugs converted in the 1950's are still in service on the Great Lakes.
